How to make a home the ultimate retreat? Part II

A home should be a happy place, a place that you find peace, make happy memories and comforts you all the time. Building a home that delights you can impact your life in more ways than you can imagine. Figuring out how to make a house feel like home, more than anything, is figuring out how to make a place where you can be yourself.

A happy environment replaces stress and anxiety, you have more positive outlook on life and your overall mood increases.

How to make a home the ultimate retreat for yourself and people that live with you is easy and simple!

I am going to write about 8 small changes that you can find inspiration that’ll make your home happy and cozy.

1. Invite amazing smells

The sense of smell is more powerful than we can ever imagine! I know for a fact you still remember that one time when you went to your grandma’s and the house smelled amazing. My memories are exactly the same.

You can look at this in a few ways. If you want your home to feel more welcoming, you could bake some cookies. People are drawn to food and have memories that are related with food smells. There is just something about fresh baked cookies or pastry that no one can explain but everyone remembers it and it feels amazing. But if you are not a very good cook (like me sometimes lol) and you want to minimize that risk, just boil a pot of water and add some lemon, orange or any herbs that you have it on your pantry. There you go your house smells fresh. Light a scented candle at your bathroom or coffee table.

If you want to upgrade, you can get an essential oil diffuser. There are tons of essential oils varieties that you can choose depending on what you want to achieve. In our home whenever we fell stressed and we want to relax, we use lavender essential oil in our diffuser. Trust me it does the job.

2. Rearrange furniture

Rearranging furniture is the easiest and cheapest way to change how you feel about your house, and it can actually make you happier! When we rearrange furniture in our homes, every time we walk to that room, at least for a good couple of weeks, we have that feeling of: wow this feel different, it feel good, even though most of the times we don’t say it out loud. You know the feeling of every day is kind of the same? Well, when you have been living on the same space for a while, especially during quarantine time, of course that space is going to feel like there is a lack of excitement. Spice it up, change the layout of your living room, move some furniture around at your bedroom, after all if you don’t like it after a week or two, you can still go back free of charge.

3. Invest in Art

“Art is a diverse range of human activities, expressing the author’s imaginative and conceptual ideas.” While art tells a story about the author, it tells a lot about whom you are and that your story is as well! Art makes a home feel more human. While sometimes it’s beautiful to have a blank white wall, sometimes it is nice to have something hanging (or don’t hang it at all, just lean it over the wall) that can effortlessly bring life into your room. Art can help to boost confidence and make us feel more engaged and resilient.

I know some people fear of putting a hole in their wall and hang some art in their living room, bedroom or bathroom. I am not one of them! Invest in art that speaks to you or tell something about you, collect pieces from places you visit and show them off. Create a wall art in our favorite spot on the house, where you can enjoy it to the fullest.

It is up to you if you decide to purchase a piece of art from your favorite local artist, create your own art or hang some of your family photos.  Having a work of art in your home encourages you to take risks and to embrace vulnerability and the result is often beautiful. And let’s not forget that art acts as a focal point, it will make a space feel finished and it will bring more life and will help you spent more time there.

4. Invite people over

There is no better feeling than enjoying a good dinner party with your close friends at your home. Make your home a happy and joyful place. Invite people over, have movie nights, games nights, dinner parties. If we learned a lesson during this quarantine is that, we don’t have to be at the bars all the time to have a good time. Play more music, enjoy every corner of your house and create happy memories. Just keep the spirit alive

Follow what your gut is telling you about anything, especially about the space that you are going to live in.  Do not listen to criticism and what others have to say about your style, your decorations or about your living room layout. If a white blank wall is what makes you happy, leave it like that. Following your gut is not being against someone, if they tell you to put curtains in the living room.  They don’t make you happy there; they do not align with the style you’re going for; that is not what you envisioned there. If your gut is telling you that your powder room would make you happy if there is some wallpaper along with an art piece, so be it. If that goes horribly wrong, don’t be ashamed to admit that didn’t work and move on. Hope you find some inspiration on these 4 small changes, to make your home feel happier. If you decide to try any of these steps, take baby steps and make it a routine after all it takes only a couple of songs to finish a task.
